Apatosaurus went by the name Brotosaurus for almost half a century before its name was officially changed in 1903.
The thick-limbed and heavy-bodied Apatosaurus shares many features with the light-weight Diplodocus – including short forelimbs with a back that slopes up from the shoulders to the hips, sled-like bones in the tail, and a long whip-like tip to the tail.
